The Ultimate Guide to DIY Rope Butter

Before you begin conditioning raw jute, you need a high-quality softening agent. “Rope butter” is a specialized blend of oil and wax designed to nourish the fibers, improve flexibility, and protect the rope from environmental wear.

The Formula

To achieve the perfect balance of glide and grip, we recommend a 7:3 oil-to-wax ratio.

  • 175g Jojoba Oil: A cosmetic-grade, cold-pressed base that mimics natural oils.
  • 75g Pure Beeswax: Cosmetic-grade wax to provide structure and protection.

Pro Tip: The ratio is key. Increasing the oil makes the rope greasier; increasing the wax makes it tackier.

Instructions

  1. Combine: Place ingredients in a heatproof bowl.
  2. Melt: Use a gentle water bath (double boiler) on low heat. Stir occasionally until liquid.
  3. Temper: Remove from heat and stir for 2 minutes to ensure a smooth, homogenous bond.
  4. Set: Pour into a clean, airtight jar and let it sit at room temperature until firm.

Application & Storage

  • For New Ropes: Use approximately 20g of butter per 1kg of rope (roughly a hazelnut-sized amount for a standard 8m length). Add to the dryer during the second cycle.
  • For Maintenance: Rub a small amount between your palms and pull the rope through your hands.
  • Storage: Keep in a cool, dark place. Ensure your tools are sterile during prep to maximize shelf life.
